Annabel Lee
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingèd seraphs...

the small moments
it is in the small, still moments when we find out who are loved ones really are. this past weekend, my dad drove up to visit. we spent a chilly and rain soaked saturday together (thanks nashville rock n roll marathon).
sunday we took a day trip to chattanooga to visit the tennessee aquarium. the rain was pouring as we drove through some of the most beautiful mountains i have ever seen. the...

alabama sunset
it happened to me when my dad and i were out driving sunday night. to be honest, i had forgotten how beautiful the outdoors truly could be. i looked up through the windshield and saw cotton candy clouds painted onto a blue sky. i looked to my right and saw miles and miles of crops. i looked to my left and saw the same thing.
for people who aren’t from the south, it is hard to explain how...

happy birthday
Today would have been his birthday. He had a wide smile that could light up a room and a kindness that could melt anyone. I feel blessed that I knew him. He was only supposed to go home for a short visit over Christmas, but the angels had other plans. One day on my way to lunch, I looked down and found a gold subway token. I have no idea where it came from or why I was the one to find it, but I...
being the person other people see you as
i have been thinking a lot lately about being the person that other people see me as. i don’t mean the way i look or where i am in life, or trying to impress others.
when i was a little girl, i grew up surrounded by encouragement and love and i am still blessed to have really amazing and super supportive friends and family. sometimes when i am feeling down, i think about how my dad sees me....
ten rows from greatness
very rarely do we get the chance to meet someone we look up to. tonight i went to a book signing in union square for carole king. my mom introduced me to ‘tapestry’ and singers like james taylor when i was really little, and i carried the music with me to this day. carole king is a genius and a total inspiration. as she was signing her memoir, i was able to thank her and let her know...
still i rise
this morning in church, they read a portion of a poem by maya angelou entitled ‘still i rise’. her words always ring true. so if you are going through something now, just know that a new day is coming. stay true to who you are and everything will work out. here is part of the poem:
You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But...

Arts + Crafts
Yesterday we walked around the arts and crafts festival. Thousands of people shuffled about to fill white tents that lined the downtown streets. Vendors proudly display twisted metal yard ornaments and painted football-themed artwork.
A side street is devoted to selling fresh cotton candy and corn dogs. The smell of hot grease filled the air as the sun beat down on my shoulders and back. Ladies...
three things that i love today: travel edition
today i am traveling, so i thought that i would post a little bit about it.
1) airports are one of my favorite things in the world (for the most part). i love watching all of the different types of people. i am obsessed with the weird things that they sell at gift shops. for instance, where would i ever use an ‘i love atlanta’ pencil with a giant peach attached? maybe i could use it...

to ashley. love betty white.
i will never forget the day that i opened my mail box and saw the signed black and white picture of betty white and her golden retreiver kitta. it read ‘to ashley. love betty white and kitta’. i have admired her for longer than i can remember, so one day i finally decided to sit down and hand write her a letter. i told her how much she meant to me and that i would always watch her...
