dusty heart of dixie

one southern girl's journey in a sort of big city

happy birthday

Today would have been his birthday. He had a wide smile that could light up a room and a kindness that could melt anyone. I feel blessed that I knew him. He was only supposed to go home for a short visit over Christmas, but the angels had other plans. One day on my way to lunch, I looked down and found a gold subway token. I have no idea where it came from or why I was the one to find it, but I picked it up and put it in my pocket. When I got back to work, I showed it to him. He said that it would bring me good luck. This was one of the last conversations that we had. I wear the token on a chain around my neck as often as I can. I wear it mostly as a reminder of him and the time that we spent together. I wear it for protection when I travel. I know that he is looking down on me and all of us that love and knew him.

I think about him often and smile. We miss and will never forget you Dassilva. Happy Birthday.
